David, Davies, Larin, Millar: Canadian Players Abroad this Season

The 2020-21 season is already back in full swing across several leagues in Europe. We’re keeping tabs on how these five Canadian Men’s National Team players fare for their club teams this season.

Jonathan David (Lille OSC)

One of the most promising attackers in Canadian Soccer, David had a big money move to Ligue 1 side, Lille from Belgian side Gent back in August, making him the most expensive Canadian transfer.

David established himself as a hot prospect last season with 23 goals in 40 games, but so far in 2020-21, it’s been a slow start to life in France. He did however have a solid showing with an assist for Lille’s third goal in their 3-0 defeat of AC Milan in last week’s Europa League group stage clash.

There are still a lot of games left this season, so we’re fully expecting him to start banging in the goals once he gets used to his new surroundings.

Alphonso Davies (FC Bayern Munich)

Alphonso Davies is coming off the back of a fantastic treble-winning season with Bayern Munich, including a solid performance in the Champions League final against Paris Saint Germain.

He’s expected to be out for 6-8 weeks after suffering an injury to his ankle. So a bumpy start compared to last season with fewer starts and an injury but Phonzie is mentally tough and will come back stronger.

Cyle Larin (Besiktas)

A strong start to the season so far with 5 goals in 9 appearances for Larin. He’ll be looking to put a difficult second season in Turkey behind him and build on last season’s encouraging loan spell in Belgium.

Let’s see if he keeps up the scoring form and finishes this season in Turkey.

Liam Millar (Liverpool FC)

Liam has already racked up 8 caps for the Canadian Men’s National Team. He’s a versatile forward with a lot of promise and made his only appearance for Liverpool so far in an FA Cup replay back in February. There’s also last season’s loan spell at Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock to build upon.

Hopefully, in addition to game time with the U23s, he gets more of a run out in the cup games for Liverpool to show what he can do. Although another loan doesn’t seem to be in the cards, it wouldn’t hurt his development either.
