2020/21 Season Review: Jonathan David

Off the back of 23 goals in 40 games for Gent in Belgium, Jonathan David signed for Lille for a reported €30 million, making him the most expensive Canadian transfer to date. Expectations were massive and it did take a while for David to adjust to a new team and a new league.

After a very slow start to his debut Ligue 1 season, he looks to have finally found his feet in his new surroundings. Let’s dig into his 2020/21 season.

Key Stats

Jonathan David finished the season with 13 goals and 5 assists in 48 games. Not quite the 23 goals from the previous season but a very respectable debut season in France.

David played over 3,000 minutes of football this season (via Transfermarkt).

Some additional key offensive stats from Davies — 0.38 goals per 90, 2.08 shots per 90, 2.65 shot-creating actions per 90, and 0.47 goal creating actions per 90 (more via FBref).

Big Moment(s)

This 👇🏾 goal against defending champions PSG set Lille on their way to a Ligue 1 title. In the context of the season, it was a massive massive goal. That was also Jonathan David’s moment of the season.

His final goal (13th) of the season ended up helping Lille win a first Ligue 1 title since 2011. That goal also makes him the current record holder for most goals by a Canadian in one season in a top-5 European league. Not a bad debut season at all.
